Here is a Celtic Cross that I made and hand engraved for a customer. Hand engraving is a lot different then the engraving you get on trophy plates, it is not machine scratched on. A graver is used to remove metal not just scratch. It is a skill that has to be learned and practiced. I am by no means a master engraver, but I am working on it.
This is the tool that does it. There are power assisted units that simulate the hammer and chisel technique of engraving so that steel can be engraved with the same effort as silver. Even using the power assisting units it is still hand engraving as skill is needed to maneuver the tool.
